✨ Why I left Melbourne and moved to a small coastal surf town

Swapping big city life for a slower pace of life.

Let’s talk real for a moment.

Why would someone leave the hustle of a big city for a quiet coastal town? In this article, I share the 10 reasons that drove me to leave Melbourne’s 5.2 million people city and move my life to a 3,600-person surf town in 2020.

From the slower pace of life to a healthier lifestyle and uninterrupted deep work, you’ll discover how this move transformed my personal and professional life. If you’ve ever dreamed of escaping city chaos, this might just inspire you to make the leap. 🌊

Now let’s jump in my friend.

10 reasons why I moved to a small coastal town

In 2020 I cracked. I couldn't live in the city anymore. Here's why I left Melbourne (a 5.2 million person city) and moved coastal (to a 3600 person surf town)...

1) 🌿 Nature on your Doorstep – I needed to wake up to the ocean and birds, not concrete and construction.

2) 🚴🏾‍♀️ Heavenly Commute - It's a 15m bike ride along coastal cliffs to local co-working Happy Spaces, a commute I look forward to.

3) 😮‍💨 Pace of Life – It's slower here. Less chaotic. You naturally slow down and do less. And when you run a business, it's a blessing to not over-commit.

4) 💡 Space to Create – I wanted a calm, inspiring environment to work on The Community Collective and Paz Sounds music. I'm constantly inspired.

5) 🧡 Community Feel – Surprise! Surprise! Smaller towns offer a closer-knit group where you constantly bump into each other. Getting that social hit is 10x easier. Especially great when you bump into friends doing surf checks.

6) 🏃‍♂️ Healthier – Social outings are focused on being active. It's more coastal walks, boogie boarding, yoga, bonfires & ocean dips, and less drinking.

7) 💵 Affordable – The cost of living is lower. Monthly rent, no paid parking, and you defs can't get Uber eats down here lol 😆

8) 🌅 Early Mornings - Restaurants close at 9pm. There's less night life & more 6am starts. Naturally you go to bed earlier and wake up for sunrises.

9) 📆 Selective with Events – Being far from the city forces you to be intentional about which events are truly worth attending. Less calendar clutter.

10) 🧠 Deep Work – The slower pace allows for more uninterrupted thinking, which is a dream for founders.

And the best bit? The city is a 1.5 hour train away. It's still possible to stay connected and dip in and out to get that city hit.
