What even is ChatGPT?

Launched into the world in November 2022, ChatGPT is an artificial-intelligence (AI) chatbot created by OpenAI, an American AI research and development company on a mission to ensure that artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity.

Basically it’s a free online robot that you can ask any question to and get the answers based on the data it has been trained on. Read more about ChatGPT works here.

Why the hype around ChatGPT?

I was chatting to our fabulous Ambassador at The Community Collective, Kat O’Donoguhe, about how ChatGPT has hit the news by storm and almost created this undeniable feeling of anxiousness about keeping up to date with how to use it to ensure we don’t lost our jobs or valuable skills to robots. I even worried about the fact that if I didn’t learn what the hell this thing was, how to use it and be more efficient then I would be left behind in the world, just like that poor elderly woman in the Simpsons.

But after doing my own research, trying ChatGPT myself and asking community builders how they have been using it, I’ve found it to be extremely useful. I now use it every week and as a result have become more efficient with my work, generated better ideas, completed research 10x faster and feel very up with the times. So my aim here is to share my learnings to ensure that you can leverage this new technology to become more efficient in your role, especially if you’re building a community.

This research has also made me realise that community builders are one of the least at-risk roles likely to be made redundant by AI and technology like ChatGPT (**big exhale of relief**).

Why? Community builders play an integral role in creating and nurturing relationships with humans. Whether it's being the face of a brand, making connections, welcoming new members or organizing quality events, community builders aim to establish a sense of belonging and shared values among members. It’s pretty damn hard to automate that.

How can ChatGPT help you build a mind blowing community?

To build a mind blowing community that has deep engagement, consistent growth, valuable impact and a strong sense of belonging for members, we need to ensure that as community builders, the majority of our time is spent with members.

Of course many roles involve elements of administration, copywriting, documenting processes and other repetitive tasks. The powerful thing about ChatGPT is that we can leverage AI to be more efficient and complete mundane tasks faster, thus freeing us up to focus more on the human-centric tasks that matter most .

7 ChatGPT prompts you need to know about

Over the past month I’ve been speaking to community builders to best understand how they are using AI to become more efficient in their roles.

So with their permission (and my appreciation) here are the 7 prompts that helped them the most:

  1. Establish standard operating procedures with Adrian Soe Myint
Adrian @ Green Brain uses ChatGPT to create standard operating procedures to outline the step-by-step process for routine tasks.

Try this prompt: Write standard operating procedures for running an online event.

  2. Conduct research with Priya Ravindra
Priya @ Punar uses ChatGPT to research and get deeper insights into her industry and find innovation opportunities. As a result, they have been sharing useful facts and statistics to educate their audience.

Try this prompt: Act as a [TOPIC] expert researcher and outline the prospects and innovation opportunities in the [INDUSTRY]. Explore the potential opportunities and challenges in a professional tone.

  3. Write workshop descriptions with Emeli Paulo
Emeli @ SoCo Collective uses ChatGPT to write short descriptions for punchy workshop promotional copywriting which saves her so much time!

Try this prompt: Write a 100 word workshop description on the topic of public speaking.

  4. Generate event ideas with Pauli Sosa
Pauli @ MUV Talks & Tātaki Auckland Unlimited uses ChatGPT to come up with new ideas for event concepts for her community. She also uses it to check her grammar too!

Try this prompt: Generate new event topic ideas for community builders in Australia.

  5. Write newsletter copy with Tasha Wright
Tasha @ GippsTech uses ChatGPT to write copy for newsletters and has helped with adding the “zing” to a written piece, plus saving time on thinking about how to frame that engaging intro and outro.

Try this prompt: Summarise the following text with the most unique and helpful points, into a 50 word introduction about what readers can expect in this edition.

  6. Write event summary notes with yours truly
Me again 👋 I love using ChatGPT to create summary notes and the key takeaways of events. I take the recording of an event (either video or voice recording on my iPhone from an IRL event) and create an event transcript in Otter.ai and then ask ChatGPT to summarise the key points to create notes for those who couldn't join live.

Try this prompt: Summarise the following text with the most unique and helpful points, into a numbered list of key points and takeaways.

  7. Create blog articles in your brands tone of voice with Alex Horton
Alex @ Melbourne Business School & Econome uses ChatGPT to not only write blog articles, but to write them in the brand's tone of voice (more details here).

Try this prompt: You are a community builder, write a blog article about [TOPIC], use a trendy and professional tone.

So there you have it! 7 tips to help you on you way.

Lastly, Rose Duong made a great comment warning us to not “upload company/proprietary/personal information to ChatGPT since that data is used to further train it”, which reminds us that this is an open source public tool that anyone can access.

Now let’s have a look at some further resources to help you.
